How I Fell Into Clay: My Unexpected Journey Into Pottery

One of the most common questions I get asked is, “How did you get into pottery?”
And honestly—it’s been more of a flow state than a plan. One beautiful, winding path after another has led me here, often by complete surprise.

To keep it simple: it all began after a really tough time. In 2016, I was bed-bound for three months with a weird virus. Recovery was slow and really long process but I was slowly pulling myself back together. Then, one day, a dear friend of mine (who must’ve had a sixth sense about this) sent me a link to a visitor's night at the Wakatipu Pottery Club.

Valentine’s Day 2017, I took my two youngest boys along and nervously stepped into the studio for the very first time. Little did I know, that night would change everything. What a gift it is to have a friend who gently nudges you toward your soul’s calling.

The club was full of beautiful, kind souls—and my heart just lit up. I was instantly captivated by the endless possibilities of clay. The very first piece I ever made was a jewelry box. It symbolized something deep: a sense of freedom, of my wings finally being unlocked… and the beginning of a very exciting (and slightly addictive) journey.

That magical start led me to take part in three LUMA events, where creating masks, flowers, and mushrooms

It also brought me to an unforgettable exhibition with my talented friend Louise—but that’s a story for another blog post.

When COVID hit and we were in lockdown, I knew I needed clay in my life more than ever. Not being able to visit the club left a huge hole, so I transformed our family’s double garage into a home studio. At first, it was just for me—but it quickly grew into something more. I started hosting two-hour creative sessions, offering a space for others to come and bring their own imagination to life in clay. And just like that, my wee studio was born.

For two and a half beautiful years, I shared that space with my lovely friend Kylie. Together, we built something special—we bought our own kiln, grew a little business, and poured our creativity into every corner of the studio.

Now, it’s just me here. But I’m still creating, still following the clay where it leads me, and still meeting the most wonderful people along the way.

Thanks for being part of the journey. 💛
Stay tuned—there’s always more to come.
